You do not find the Hotel Driftmere by going to it. Many have tried. The road indicated on every map is the right road; the turning at the elm tree is the right turning; the gravel drive is the gravel drive. You will arrive at a small lawn, a clipped hedge, a stone bench, and nothing else. The hotel will not be there.

You find the Hotel Driftmere on the way to something else. You glimpse the gable from the corner of your eye, on a train, between hills; you mention it to no one; an hour later you find yourself in the foyer, and a porter is taking your coat, and the porter has been expecting you. The keys are kept in a velvet-lined drawer behind the desk. The keys are made of horn. They are unmarked, because the rooms are also unmarked, and the porter will walk with you until you both arrive at the door behind which you would already, on some level, have placed your luggage.

The bill, when it is presented, is always reasonable. It is itemised. Among the items: arrival, permission to leave, the night air. The total is, in every reported instance, an amount the guest happens to be carrying.

Ключи держат в ящике, выстланном бархатом, за стойкой. Ключи — роговые. На них нет помет, ибо и комнаты без помет, и швейцар идёт с тобою рядом, покуда вы оба не подойдёте к той двери, за которой ты, в некоей глубине своей, и без того уже положил бы свой багаж.

Счёт, когда его подают, всегда умерен. И с разбивкою. Среди прочего значатся: прибытие, дозволение уехать, ночной воздух. Итог же, во всех известных случаях, оказывается ровно тою суммой, что у гостя при себе.
